How Cons Work

Cons follow a predictable structure that lets the con artist control the victim from the first moment of contact to the final payoff. Each stage builds on the last, shaping the victim’s emotions, expectations, and decisions until they feel as if the con is their own idea. Understanding these stages makes the mechanics of deception clear and shows how ordinary people get pulled into extraordinary traps.

Stage 1 – Seduction

The first stage is Seduction. This is where the con artist identifies the target and creates the first spark of interest. It might be charm, sympathy, opportunity, or simple attention, but it is always intentional.

Stage 2 – The Play

The second stage is The Play. Here the con artist builds trust. They present themselves as helpful, knowledgeable, or vulnerable, whatever the mark needs to see.

Stage 3 – The Ploy

The third stage is The Ploy. This is the hook. The con artist introduces the story, the opportunity, or the emotional trigger that pulls the victim deeper.

Stage 4 – The Send

The fourth stage is The Send. The victim is guided toward a decision that feels natural but serves the con artist’s goal.

Stage 5 – The Blow Off

The fifth stage is The Blow Off. The con artist exits cleanly, leaving the victim confused, embarrassed, or convinced nothing was wrong.
